Gynecologic Cancer Surgery

Early-stage gynecologic cancer

Women can develop several types of gynecologic cancers. The most common types are cervical, endometrial (uterine) and ovarian cancer. Treatment options depend on the specific type and stage of cancer. Women with early-stage gynecologic cancer often undergo a hysterectomy - the surgical removal of the uterus. Sometimes the surgeon also will remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes and/or select lymph nodes during a hysterectomy.

Hysterectomy to treat cancer

There are different types of hysterectomy procedures depending on the patient's medical history and health, as well as the extent of cancer growth.

Hysterectomy can be performed through the vagina or through the abdomen. If the uterus is large or there is internal scarring from prior surgery or other conditions, abdominal hysterectomy commonly is performed.

Traditionally, an abdominal hysterectomy requires a wide incision below the navel. This procedure can be painful, with a risk of infection and significant blood loss. After surgery, a long recovery (often six weeks) and pain medications are necessary. In addition, some patients are not happy with the scar left by the incision.
