Gynecologic Cancer

The gynecologic oncology specialists at Norton Women’s Care provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for all types of gynecologic cancers, including specialties in cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer.

Hysterectomy to Treat Early-Stage Gynecological Cancer

Treatment options depend on the specific type and stage of cancer. Women with early-stage gynecologic cancer often undergo a hysterectomy—the surgical removal of the uterus. Sometimes the surgeon also will remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes and/or select lymph nodes during the procedure.

There are different types of hysterectomy procedures depending on the patient's medical history and health, as well as the extent of cancer growth.

Hysterectomy can be performed through the vagina or abdomen. If the uterus is large or there is internal scarring from prior surgery or other conditions, abdominal hysterectomy is usually performed.

Traditionally, an abdominal hysterectomy requires a wide incision below the navel. This procedure can be painful, with a risk of infection and significant blood loss. After surgery, a long recovery (often six weeks) and pain medications are necessary. In addition, some patients are not happy with the scar left by the incision.

Norton Women’s Care is proud to offer laparoscopic hysterectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that requires significantly smaller incisions. For patients, that means less pain and scarring, shorter hospital stay and faster return to daily activities.
