Know the Warning Signs

The most common symptom of heart disease is angina or chest pain. Angina is described as:

  • Heaviness
  • Pressure
  • Aching
  • Burning
  • Fullness
  • Squeezing
  • Painful feeling

While the discomfort is typically found in the chest, it can also be felt in the arms, left shoulder, neck, throat, jaw or back. Often, angina and chest pain is dismissed as indigestion. Other symptoms of heart disease include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations of the heart
  • Increased heart rate
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Perspiration
