Nephrostomy Tube Placement

Nephrostomy tube placement is mainly used to decompress and temporarily drain an obstructed collecting system (usually in the renal system - the part of the urinary tract that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder- when there is a urinary obstruction). The patient is sedated and given a local anesthetic to eliminate pain.

A small nick is made in the skin to facilitate passage of the needle. Fluoro or Ultrasound guides the interventional radiologist in passing the needle into the fluid-containing structures inside the kidney.
