Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a form of arteriosclerosis, more commonly known as hardening of the arteries. PAD is a condition in which the large- and medium-sized arteries that supply blood to the extremities become narrowed or clogged. PAD increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and amputation of the legs. Screening for PAD involves placing blood pressure cuffs on the arms and ankles and determining the ratio between the pressure readings.
