Going Inside the Brain to Beat Stroke

Staffed by one of the most experienced neurosurgery teams in the region, Norton Stroke Care offers stroke patients the latest advances in surgical technique and intervention.

In general, the goals of surgery are to:

  • Prevent further damage to the brain
  • Eliminate the root cause of the brain attack
  • Restore the brain to normal function
  • Prevent future strokes from occurring

To achieve these goals, neurosurgeons use techniques such as "clipping" aneurysms to prevent further bleeding, removing abnormal blood vessels known as AVMs and relieving pressure build-up in the brain. Other surgical procedures include grabbing and removing clots with tiny clot retrieving devices, breaking up clots with wires and implanting stents to restore blood flow.
