An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is caused when the lining in the wall of the aorta becomes weak, resulting in an abnormal ballooning or enlargement. Many aneurysms can be treated with stent grafts. A few, however, must be treated with traditional (open) repair. In this surgical procedure, a large incision is made in the abdomen. The abdominal aorta is replaced with synthetic (man-made) material.
