The Practice Environment
Each of Norton Healthcare's adult-service hospitals and its pediatric facility, Kosair Children's Hospital, has its own pharmacy. In addition, Norton Cancer Institute maintains several pharmacies.
All Norton Healthcare pharmacists serve the needs of children and adults and participate in a variety of inpatient and outpatient experiences in specialized areas, such as cardiology, mother/baby, oncology, acute care and more.
Norton Healthcare's pharmacy services are decentralized, which means our pharmacists spend time on hospital floors with other health care providers playing an integral role as members of each patient's health care team. Because our pharmacists participate in direct patient care and outcomes, they work closely with physicians and nurses to monitor and maximize the effectiveness of medications. Our pharmacists provide clinical services, such as clinical rounding, pharmacokinetic dosing, monitoring and writing TPN, pain management, anti-microbial stewardship, renal dosing and targeted drug therapies.
"I decided on a career in hospital pharmacy over retail because I wanted to continue to be challenged. I chose Norton Healthcare over other hospitals in the area because of the people. I wanted an environment where everyone works together. Each pharmacist has a specialty, but they all work together to ensure that the knowledge is shared among all the pharmacists."
