Maggie Amos

Losing weight. It’s the most common New Year’s resolution. And it’s the most difficult to keep. Maggie Amos, a 23-year-old University of Louisville senior, knows this first-hand. She struggled with her weight all her life – until three years ago when she resolved to get the weight off no matter what.

“I was unhappy with my life and knew I had to make a change,” Amos said. “I did not want to let my weight control one more day of my life. I wanted to take control of my life.”

Amos had struggled mentally and physically for years, and dieted without success.

“As a college student I missed out on a lot of great opportunities because I was too ashamed of myself. I felt I wasn’t good enough because I was overweight,” Amos said. “The weight took a toll on my body as well. It was becoming harder to do mundane tasks, like walking up a flight of stairs.”

Finally, after seeing the great success her parents had with weight loss surgery, Amos decided to learn more about surgical options for helping her gain control of her weight. She visited Norton Weight Management Services, where she learned about surgical weight loss options and the lifestyle changes she’d need to make after surgery. She decided adjustable gastric banding was the right decision for her.

Amos won’t say surgical weight loss is easy, but she says it has changed her life for the better.

“The hardest part about the recovery was the first two weeks being on a liquid diet,” she said. “I had to end my addiction to food. I have slipped many times, but rather than letting it get me down, I just got back up and tried again. Change is hard and creating healthy habits is hard, but once they become a habit, it gets easier and easier.”

Amos offers this advice to those trying to succeed at weight loss: Replace time spent eating with another activity, for her it was crafting. Educate yourself about nutrition and how healthy foods affect the way you feel. And find exercises you enjoy and will stick with.

Now 105 pounds lighter, Amos is living the life she has always dreamed of.

“My weight is not holding me back anymore,” Amos said. “I’m not afraid to meet new people and try new things. Now I feel like my life is really beginning and I am finally the person I want to be.”

Maggie achieved weight loss success because she changed habits and behaviors. If you’ve made a resolution to lose weight, this may be the key to your success too.

“Your goal needs to focus on health benefits in addition to pounds,” said Amos’ bariatric surgeon Jeff Allen, M.D. “If you don’t see the results on the scale but you’ve been eating healthfully and exercising, then you are still succeeding and the pounds will start to come off.”

Setting a behavioral goal, such as cutting out soft drinks or going to the gym three times a week, instead of a numbers goal is a key to success.

“Goals like these are measurable and controllable,” Dr. Allen said. “You’ll feel good when you see that you are able to gauge your success, and this will motivate you to keep going.”

Simple tips for weight loss success

  1. Don’t eliminate all the foods you really like. If you do, you’ll just feel deprived.
The key is eating them in moderation.
  2. Mark time on your calendar for going to the gym.
That way you have no excuse to skip the gym because something else came up.
  3. Anytime is the right time to start a weight loss goal – it doesn’t have to be the
    beginning of the year!
