LOUISVILLE, KY. (Sept. 2, 2009): The world-renowned orthopaedic spine surgeons of the Norton Leatherman Spine Center have joined the Norton Healthcare family of employed physicians, Norton Healthcare officials announced today. Their employment by Norton Healthcare will allow for growth and enhancement in the spine center’s efforts for advanced and innovative patient care, acclaimed clinical research, and superb medical education and training.
Joining Norton Healthcare as of Sept. 1 are John R. Johnson, M.D., co-director of the Norton Leatherman Spine Center and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine; Steven D. Glassman, M.D.; Rolando M. Puno, M.D.; John R. Dimar II, M.D.; Mitchell J. Campbell, M.D.; Mladen Djurasovic, M.D.; and Charles H. Crawford III, M.D.
The physicians, based at Norton Hospital, work in collaboration with the neurosurgeons of Norton Neuroscience Institute to serve adult and pediatric patients from around the country and abroad for treatment of chronic back pain, scoliosis, spinal deformities, disc disease of the neck and low back, degenerative spinal disorder, spine and spinal cord injuries, and tumors of the spine. Norton Leatherman Spine Center is widely recognized as one of the top spine centers in the country and one of only a handful of physician practices dedicated exclusively to spine care. It is also one of the few that combine advanced patient care with world-class clinical research and fellowship education and training programs.
“As people live longer, the spine expertise of the Norton Leatherman Spine Center will become even more important for people in our community, region and worldwide,” said Stephen A. Williams, president & CEO of Norton Healthcare. “With the employment model for the orthopaedic spine surgeons, Norton Healthcare will be able to provide additional resources for the center to enhance and expand its internationally-recognized efforts in patient care, clinical research, and medical education and training programs. We are delighted that the Norton organization’s long-term partnership with the orthopaedic spine surgeons has evolved to an even closer relationship that will benefit thousands of additional patients in the years to come.”
Dr. Johnson said additional resources from Norton Healthcare will provide many potential benefits beyond an expansion of the clinical research and medical education and training programs. “We hope to expand the number of orthopaedic spine surgeons available to our community, and to establish new partnerships with hospitals and physicians throughout our state and region,” Dr. Johnson said. “We also believe this new model will provide an even better integration of patient care among orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, pain management specialists and other medical disciplines. What has now occurred is that a world-renowned spine center will become even better.”
In addition to the seven orthopaedic spine surgeons, joining Norton Physician Services are four physician fellows and 40 staff members. Norton Leatherman Spine Center is based on the 9th floor of the Gray Street Medical Building on Norton Healthcare’s downtown campus. The physicians perform surgeries at Norton Hospital, Kosair Children’s Hospital, Norton Brownsboro Hospital and University of Louisville Hospital. In 2008, the orthopaedic spine surgeons performed more than 2,000 surgeries.
About Norton Leatherman Spine Center
Norton Leatherman Spine Center traces its roots to the 1940s in Louisville, when Dr. Kenton D. Leatherman established his strong reputation for his scientific evaluation of spinal problems. Dr. Leatherman’s insight and understanding of spinal deformity, combined with new techniques in spine surgery, elevated him to become a founding father of modern spine surgery and one of the most respected spine surgeons in the world. Today, physicians from around the world travel to Louisville to study with the center’s surgeons and to complete a fellowship in one of the first advanced spinal training programs in the United States. Many patients from around the country and abroad turn to Norton Leatherman Spine Center after a previous surgical experience elsewhere has been unsuccessful. Dr. Johnson and neurosurgeon Christopher B. Shields, M.D., president of Norton Neuroscience Institute, serve as the center’s co-directors.
The center is among a few nationally that bring together both orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, to work collaboratively for the benefit of patients and physicians. And, because every spine surgery is as unique as this relationship, surgeons at the center carefully coordinate care of each surgical case to provide the best possible outcome for patients.
