Communitywide open house provides opportunity to see new home for expanded multiple sclerosis services and neurology care
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 30, 2011): In honor of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, Norton Neuroscience Institute will celebrate the grand opening of The MS Center and Norton Neurology Services, a new home for dedicated care and support services for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in one convenient location at Norton Suburban Hospital.
A communitywide open house will be held today, Wednesday, March 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Norton Medical Plaza II – Suburban, third floor, 3991 Dutchmans Lane.
With the opening of these consolidated services, Norton Neuroscience Institute now provides the region’s most extensive MS services. Under the leadership of Kentucky’s first MS-certified physician, Robert S. Tillett Jr., M.D., Norton Neurology Services, the comprehensive multiple sclerosis program includes dedicated MS specialists, diagnostic and infusion services, enhanced patient resources, access to clinical trials and centralized treatment options in one location. Dr. Tillett is director of The MS Center, and Roy Meckler, M.D., Norton Neurology Services, is co-director. Jenifer Patterson, APRN, an MS-certified nurse practitioner who has five years of experience treating MS patients, also provides comprehensive care and treatment for MS patients.
MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults, with most being diagnosed between ages 20 and 50. The progressively degenerative neurological disease affects nearly 5,000 Kentuckians and causes devastating physical, mental, emotional, social and financial effects on their lives. Approximately 15,000 individuals with MS live in the Ohio Valley region.
“MS is a devastating disease that can cause debilitating fatigue, difficulty walking, memory problems and mental confusion,” Dr. Tillett said. “These symptoms can make it difficult for patients to get to their clinical appointments. The fact that they now will have all their MS services centralized in one location will make a tremendous positive impact on their ability to access the services they sorely need. In addition, through Norton Neuroscience Institute and The MS Center, patients also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research studies. Until now, that type of easy access to these services has not existed in this area.”
Centralizing physician care and resources on the Norton Suburban campus provides patients with easy access to treatment and diagnostic services, including:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Computed tomography
- Evoked potential tests – brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP), visual evoked potential (VEP) and sensory evoked potential (SEP)
- Blood collection and analysis
- Lumbar puncture
- Infusion services for intravenous infusions of steroids and other treatments, such as Tysabri
The MS Center complements the treatment and diagnostic services offered on the Norton Suburban campus by providing the patients with enhanced support services, including:
- Mental health counseling
- Support groups
- Education programs
- Nutrition programs
- Exercise programs
- Patient assistance
“We think this is an excellent development for the MS community, and I’m honored that Norton Suburban Hospital can take part in it,” said John Harryman, president and administrator, Norton Suburban Hospital. “Norton Suburban is very well equipped to provide the diagnostic and clinical intervention services necessary for this patient population.”
In an effort to be mindful of the special needs of MS patients, additional parking spaces were added near the entrance of Norton Neurology Services to ensure that patients are not exposed to the extreme heat and cold of our changing seasons, which can cause an exacerbation of symptoms, according to Harryman.
“MS patients have been underserved for far too long in our community, and we look forward to helping meet their specialized needs for care,” he said.
