Norton Suburban Hospital receives center of excellence designation for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 20, 2013) – Norton Suburban Hospital, future home of Norton Women’s and Kosair Children’s Hospital, has been designated an AAGL Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive GynecologyTM (COEMIG).
The COEMIG program allows patients to distinguish providers who have met the requirements for performing high-quality surgical procedures from those who have not. Earning the COEMIG designation shows that surgeons and the hospital have partnered and demonstrate a cross-organizational commitment to minimally invasive gynecological surgical care.
Norton Suburban Hospital joins approximately 170 other hospitals and 440 surgeons in 24 countries participating in the AAGL centers of excellence program. Norton Healthcare physicians earning the designation are David L. Doering, M.D., Mary E. Gordinier, M.D., Michael R. Milam, M.D., Nancy J. Newman, M.D., Dwight D. Pridham, M.D., Steven H. Pursell, M.D., and Jonathan H. Reinstine, M.D.
“This center of excellence designation means that we are able to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery patients,” said Charlotte Ipsan, RNC, MSN, NNP-BC, chief administrative officer, Norton Suburban Hospital. “The COEMIG program shows our commitment to excellence and improves the health and well-being of our patients.”
“With advances in minimally invasive gynecological surgery, we have been able to provide many women with an alternative to traditional surgery,” said Dr. Reinstine, OB/GYN with Associates in Obstetrics & Gynecology, a Part of Norton Women’s Care and leader of the hospital’s COEMIG designation team. “The COEMIG program fosters quality improvement in this type of surgery, and participation has focused our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines.”
The COEMIG program is focused on improving the safety and quality of gynecologic patient care worldwide and lowering the overall costs associated with successful treatment. The program is designed to expand patient awareness of and access to minimally invasive gynecologic procedures performed by surgeons and facilities that have demonstrated excellence in these advanced techniques.
Minimally invasive gynecologic procedures include laparoscopic myomectomy and uterine artery embolization for the treatment of fibroids, sacrospinous fixation for advanced uterine prolapse and laparoscopic hysterectomy.
Endometriosis, uterine fibroids and adenomyosis are conditions that are treated through the hospital’s pelvic health program. Chronic pelvic dysfunction affects as many as one of every four women, and many women do not realize their condition is treatable.
Formerly called the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the AAGL has a membership extending to more than 110 countries and is an internationally recognized authority in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. With more than 7,000 members worldwide, the association counts among its members the foremost authorities in gynecology and pioneers in technique and procedures.
