LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 3, 2010): Kosair Children’s Hospital, a part of Norton Healthcare, has been ranked in the 2010-11 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” published online today at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The 2010-11 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings also will be published in the August print issue of U.S. News & World Report, which will be available to subscribers around July 15 and on newsstands starting July 27. Kosair Children’s was one of only 62 children’s centers in the country to be ranked in at least one of 10 specialty areas.
This is the second year in a row Kosair Children’s Hospital has been included on the list. It ranks 26th in the country in the treatment of respiratory disorders, up from 30th last year.
“We scored particularly well in managing asthma inpatient care, cystic fibrosis outcomes and low incidence of bloodstream infections,” said Thomas D. Kmetz, president, Kosair Children’s Hospital and Pediatrics Services.
The hospital also was credited for receiving “Magnet” designation from the Commission on Magnet Recognition Program of the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2007.
“We are pleased to be recognized among the best children’s hospitals in America for the second year in a row,” Kmetz said. “Kosair Children’s Hospital staff members have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of the children of our community and do so in a caring and compassionate way. The Kosair Children’s family is richly deserving of this recognition.”
Earlier this year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America ranked Louisville, Ky., as the 28th worst U.S. city to live in for asthma sufferers, and just last month, the Allergy Foundation of America ranked Louisville as the second worst spring allergy capital in the nation. The staff at Kosair Children’s know this all too well. That’s one reason why Kosair Children’s offers the services of a dedicated asthma educator, Beth VanCleave, to its patients and their families. In addition, Kosair Children’s treats hundreds of children with asthma and other respiratory disorders each year.
In partnership with Drs. Nemr Eid and Ron Morton, pediatric pulmonary medicine specialists at the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics, the hospital also coordinates the region’s only pediatric cystic fibrosis clinic, the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Kosair Children’s Hospital. In 2006, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation designated the clinic as one of five benchmark centers in the United States. This designation followed a five-year trend of excellent pulmonary outcomes.
“It is a great honor for Kosair Children’s to be recognized for its excellence in pulmonary services,” said Kyle Green, system vice president, Pediatric Services, Norton Healthcare. “Our goal is for Kosair Children’s to become recognized as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, and today’s announcement illustrates tremendous progress in that direction.”
