Pulmonary Services
The Pediatric Pulmonary service of Kosair Children's Hospital provides comprehensive care for children with lung disorders and diseases.
The Pediatric Pulmonary service is highly active in the community and serves as a resource for information on all aspects of children's lung problems. A wide variety of services are provided through several specialized clinics and centers, including::
Pulmonary Function Laboratory
Interprets and performs pulmonary functions tests in infants and children such as:
- Spirometry
- Lung volumes
- Diffusion capacity
- Methacholine challenge test
- Exercise challenge test
- Indirect calorimetry
- Multi-channel pneumocardiogram
- Incentive spirometry
- Noninvasive oxygen monitoring
Cystic Fibrosis Center
The Cystic Fibrosis Center is one of 120 centers in the United States accredited by the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Specialists provide diagnosis and multidisciplinary care for cystic fibrosis patients of all ages. Professional education and training is also provided.
Childhood Asthma Care and Education Center
Asthma Guide
Asthma is the most common diagnosis among hospitalized children. It is also the leading cause of emergency room visits and school absenteeism. This center is exclusively dedicated to helping treat children with asthma. It offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art therapeutic strategies for all stages of asthma.
Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic
This clinic specializes in caring for children with respiratory disorders. Careful consideration is given to developing individualized therapy for conditions including:
- Infantile wheezing
- Chronic lung disease (bronchopulmonary dysplasia)
- Upper airway obstruction
- Pneumonia
- Bronchiectasis
- Pulmonary mycosis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Interstitial lung disease
Technology Dependent Center
The Technology Dependent Center cares for children who suffer from any of a variety of disorders which are managed through the use of special technology. Examples include children on home ventilators, those who have a tracheotomy, or those who require oxygen on an ongoing basis.
The pulmonary services provided at Kosair Children's Hospital are recommended by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Thoracic Society and have resulted in significant improvements in the health of our patients.
