Personalized breastfeeding support from Norton Healthcare

Norton Healthcare Lactation Centers and Services provide personalized support for breastfeeding mothers and their infants. Internationally board-certified lactation consultants are available to provide a broad range of services dedicated to supporting the family through the identification and correction of issues that may interfere with successful breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding services:

  • Individual counseling regarding breastfeeding
  • Assistance with infant latch and positioning
  • Creamatocrit analysis to determine fat and calories in milk
  • Measurements of amount of milk transfer (pre- and post-nursing weights)
  • Assistance in determining amount of milk baby needs and recognizing baby’s cues
  • Evaluation and assistance in interpreting baby’s behaviors as related to nursing
  • Assistance with special devices, including breast pump selection and use
  • Assistance in increasing milk supply
  • Planning for mother’s return to work
  • Follow-up for poor weight gain in infant
  • Informal small group classes for new breastfeeding moms
  • Communitywide breastfeeding advocacy site

Breastfed babies have:

  • Fewer infections
  • Lower rate of SIDS and other forms of infant death
  • Lower rates of childhood cancer, diabetes and asthma
  • Better brain development and higher IQ
  • Lower risk of childhood obesity

  • Quicker return to pre-pregnancy weight
  • Lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers
  • Lower risk of osteoporosis and diabetes

Access to inpatient services
Breastfeeding experts are available at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Norton Hospital and Norton Women’s Hospital and Kosair Children’s Hospital.

Lactation-certified nurses and additional clinical staff are available for families of newborns to receive education and support appropriate to their needs shortly after delivery and throughout their inpatient stay.

Outpatient lactation center
Our experts are available for outpatient consultation by appointment Monday through Friday (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). They can assist with breastfeeding and related issues.
