Mary Helen Davis, M.D. 

About Me

Mary Helen Davis, M.D., works in program development at Norton Cancer Institute. Prior to assuming this role, she served as director of Behavioral Oncology for Norton Cancer Institute. Dr. Davis graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency training in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and a consult/liaison fellowship. She then completed an administrative psychiatry fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Dr. Davis spent 15 years in academic psychiatry, initially on the faculty at Harvard followed by an associate professorship in psychiatry at the University of Louisville. Dr. Davis is board certified in psychiatry, neurology, psychosomatic medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.

Dr. Davis has been active in organized medicine throughout her career, serving in leadership roles with the Kentucky Psychiatric Medical Association, including past president, as well as the Greater Louisville Medical Society as a member of numerous committees, including the legislative, media and leadership and professional development committees. She also has served on the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure and the board of the Kentucky Physicians Health Foundation. On a national level, Dr. Davis has served with the American Psychiatric Association (APA), including two terms on the Board of Trustees. She has chaired a board work group on the mental health needs of active duty military, veterans and their families, and a work group on maintenance of certification. Dr. Davis currently is chair of Gov. Steve Beshears advisory council on prescription drug abuse.

Dr. Davis is the recipient of the Harvey St. Clair distinguished service award for her commitment and work in organized psychiatry. She is a recipient of the Excellence in Mental Health Award for her leadership in mental health and advocacy and was awarded an APA presidential commendation for her contribution to that organization.

Dr. Davis research interests have been in the study of sexually traumatized women and cognitive behavioral therapy. Currently she is working on a pilot study on palliative care of advanced lung cancer patients. She has been published in numerous publications and has presented nationally and internationally on a variety of topics, including post-traumatic stress disorder, mood and anxiety disorders, addiction and dual diagnosis, personality disorders, group therapy, medical professionalism, management of complex medical and psychiatric patients, psycho-oncology and palliative care.
