Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

Norton Brownsboro Hospital is home to the region’s most advanced epilepsy monitoring unit. Opened in September 2010, the epilepsy monitoring unit has already helped hundreds of patients through long-term electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and the latest surgical interventions, including electrode placement on the brain to better understand the origin of seizures and removal of brain tissue causing seizures. As part of Norton Neuroscience Institute’s multidisciplinary approach to epilepsy care, the Norton Brownsboro Hospital epilepsy monitoring unit is a specialized inpatient unit designed to evaluate and diagnose seizure disorders.

Patients are typically admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit to undergo prolonged video EEG monitoring. Video EEG provides a continuous reading of brain activity day and night. Monitoring brain activity with video EEG assists the epilepsy neurologist in determining the type of seizure and its origin. With this information, our team of experts can determine which treatment options may be most successful.

Because there are many different forms of epilepsy, the first step in treating it is to make the right diagnosis. With an understanding of each individual’s seizure condition, epilepsy specialists with Norton Neuroscience Institute can recommend the best treatment for each person. Therapies can range from changes in diet to medications to surgical interventions – all with the goal of reducing the frequency of seizures and improving quality of life.

The epilepsy monitoring unit is staffed by physicians, nurses and technicians specially trained to care for and monitor patients experiencing seizures. It is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and diagnostic equipment, and features private rooms with enhanced amenities to make each patient’s stay more relaxed and comfortable. Family members are welcome and encouraged to stay with patients.

Prior to most admissions, an outpatient neurological consultation is scheduled for patients not referred by a neurologist. During the patient’s stay, an epilepsy neurologist is responsible for the patient’s care and may consult with other physicians for diagnosis and treatment. A complete report of findings and treatment recommendations is shared with referring physicians. Length of stay in the unit depends on the severity of the patient’s seizures.

The epilepsy monitoring unit at Norton Brownsboro Hospital is a member of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. The unit is recognized as part of a specialized epilepsy center whose mission is to provide an accurate diagnosis of seizure type and seizure syndrome; comprehensive epilepsy education for patients and caregivers; appropriate treatment specific to the diagnosis; and surgical treatment.
