Norton Healthcare CME Mission Statement

Purpose and alignment with Norton Healthcare's Corporate Mission
Norton Healthcare's purpose is to meet the healthcare needs and improve the health status of people in the Louisville region in a manner consistent with the faith heritage of its founding organizations.  Providing a regionally recognized program in CME is consistent with these goals.  The Office of CME  is dedicated to being a regional leader in providing quality continuing medical education for the purpose of providing its physician practitioners the most current information available. Including the comprehensive medical staff of Norton Healthcare, the faculty of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and additional speakers of national reputation as a resource, Norton Healthcare will provide continuing medical education programs that are current and scientifically sound.  Evidence-based approaches will be emphasized and utilized whenever possible.

Content Areas:
The CME content encompasses that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine and the provision of healthcare to the public. Continuing medical education activities will be based upon the expressed needs and interests of healthcare providers within the region, Norton Healthcare corporate initiatives, as well as the major clinical services offered by our facilities.  Recommendations for patient care arising from CME activities are evidence-based and free of commercial bias.

Target Audience:
The principal target audience for these activities is the physician members of our divisional medical staffs and referring physicians, and other practitioners in both pediatric and adult specialties within our market area.  As the largest CME provider in the KMA system, our mission is to expand our activities to provide leadership, creativity and counsel to smaller hospitals and other groups of physicians throughout the region.

Type of Activities Provided:
Activities will be provided for many medical specialties that have a significant presence within Norton Healthcare facilities.  These activities, often multidisciplinary in nature, will be delivered in a manner appropriate for the subject matter that will include, but are not limited to, both directly and jointly-sponsored regularly scheduled conferences, courses, and enduring materials.  The methods of instruction are varied to offer different types of learning experiences, appealing to diverse and individual learning styles and practice setting requirements.  They include live conferences, interactive audio, video and electronic programs, self-study materials and hands-on training. As new innovative methods become available, these will be evaluated for integration within our current methods.  The scientific integrity and professional quality of the content and the quality and appropriateness of the educational methods and materials will be assured.

Expected Results of the Program:
It is the expected outcome that these activities alone or in combination will result in continuously enhanced knowledge and practice technique.  Norton Healthcare is committed to assessing the impact and effectiveness of its CME program by both qualitative and quantitative methods such as post-activity evaluated physician responses related to immediate practice change and satisfaction, patient outcomes over time,  and a comprehensive overall annual and ongoing evaluation of the CME program as a whole.
