What you need to know

Watch this video to get answers to some common questions about the health insurance marketplace.

Starting next year, most Americans will be required to have health insurance. Kentucky has its own “health insurance marketplace,” called Kynect, where you can compare available plans, sign up for a plan and receive payment assistance, discounts or tax credits to help cover costs. Kentucky’s marketplace is Kynect. If you live in Indiana, your marketplace is Healthcare Marketplace.

To help make sense of it all, here are answers to some common questions about how to use the health insurance marketplace.

What happens if I don’t have health insurance or can’t afford it?
Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, most Americans will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty. If you currently do not have insurance, you may be eligible for payment assistance or programs like Medicaid or the Kentucky Children’s Health Insurance Program.

How do I know which plan is right for me?
It can be intimidating making sense of all of the information. Luckily, all plans cover preventive services and “essential health benefits,” such as doctor’s visits, hospital admissions and care for pregnant women and children. In addition, health insurance companies will no longer be able to reject people or charge more based on how healthy they are.

When choosing a plan, start by deciding if it’s important to you to stay with your current doctors, then check which plans include your doctors. Next, see which plans cover your hospital of choice. You can find this out by viewing the list of providers in each plan’s network.

I want to keep my Norton Healthcare doctor and/or hospital. Which plan do I choose?
If you have a Norton Healthcare doctor and want to continue to use Norton Healthcare hospitals, you will need to choose a plan that includes Norton Healthcare.. By choosing a plan that includes Norton Healthcare, you will have access to all Norton Healthcare hospitals and providers, including Kosair Children’s Hospital, Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro and Norton Women’s and Kosair Children’s Hospital (opening in 2014). If you choose a plan that does not include Norton Healthcare doctors and facilities, you will not be turned away, but you could be responsible for up to 100 percent of costs.

If you have children, this is an important decision. The plans listed above are currently the only plans that cover both Norton Healthcare and Kosair Children's Hospital.

When do I need to choose a plan?
The marketplace opened Oct. 1, 2013. Your plan can become effective as soon as Jan. 1, 2014, depending on when you sign up. You have until March 31, 2014, to choose a plan. After that, you could be charged a penalty for not signing up.
