Hip & Pelvic Conditions

Hip and Pelvic Conditions

Your hip is one of your body’s largest weight-bearing joints, as well as one of its most flexible. It’s your hip that allows you to have a wide range of motion – moving forward and backward, side to side and twisting – all while supporting the weight of your body.

Your hip consists of two main parts – a ball at the top of your thigh bone (femur) that fits into a rounded socket (acetabulum) in your pelvis. Ligaments connect the ball to the socket to provide stability to the joint. A thin membrane covers the surface of the hip joint and makes a fluid that lubricates your hip to practically eliminate friction.

Normally, all of these parts work together, allowing you to move easily and without pain. But hip problems are common. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, nearly 200,000 total hip replacements are performed in the U.S. every year.
