Integrative Medicine

Our goal is to provide comprehensive care for the entire person — body, mind and spirit. We strive to make your hospital experience less stressful so you can focus on healing. One way we are doing this is by offering holistic care and integrative medical services.

If you would like to receive one of the following holistic therapies, ask your nurse about availability.

Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils and other aromatic compounds to improve mood or sense of well-being. The aroma of these oils may be inhaled to stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction or relieve congestion, or the oils may be applied to the skin in a diluted form using touch therapies.

Massage therapy
Medical massage therapy involves hands-on work to reduce muscle tension, pain and anxiety.

Music therapy
Music therapy is provided by a board-certified music therapist. It is used to address emotional, cognitive and social needs, and can help patients and their families cope. Music therapy can enhance the quality of life for patients and caregivers as well as give families an opportunity to share time together in a positive, creative way. It can have a significant positive impact on the overall health and well-being of persons dealing with a variety of conditions. Music therapy services are currently available at Norton Women's Kosair Children's Hospital in the NICU as well as for oncology patients. For more information about music therapy throughout Norton Healthcare, please go to Www.Nortonhealthcare/Musictherapy.

Reiki (energy therapy)
Reiki means universal energy and is a Japanese healing technique commonly called palm healing or hands-on healing. It is used to promote stress reduction, healing and relaxation. The Reiki practitioner transfers energy through his or her palms to the patient. The receiver does not have to be physically touched to receive this energy.

Spiritual care
Helping patients stay connected to their faith and maintain religious rituals and practices is the responsibility of all hospital staff. Chaplains can support patients and their families with spiritual issues that may arise during times of illness, such as help coping with feelings of powerlessness, pain, loneliness and isolation as well as understanding the meaning of their current situation.
