Medical Stabilization Service

Breaking the cycle of addiction

When faced with a drug or alcohol addiction, the idea of “detox” is the last thing many are willing to consider. But it is the first thing they need in order to recover. With medical stabilization treatment and an ongoing desire to remain free of the stronghold of substance abuse, many individuals can resume and maintain healthy lifestyles. Inpatient medical stabilization services are available at Norton Audubon Hospital for adults ages 18 and older who are currently using or experiencing acute withdrawal from drugs or alcohol.

What is medical stabilization?
Medical stabilization is the process by which withdrawal symptoms are medically managed in a hospital setting. It can be dangerous to suddenly stop using alcohol or some drugs without proper medical support, especially for individuals who have been using for a long period of time. Medical stabilization makes the process of withdrawal more comfortable, thereby improving the odds for a successful recovery. Learn More.

What is the New Vision service?
New Vision consists of a medically supervised hospital stay that typically lasts three to five days. Upon admission, patients undergo a medical history, physical, complete laboratory workup and a nursing assessment. Patients who are under the influence of chemical substances and considered medically unstable are closely observed and monitored.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses provides:

  • Individualized treatment
  • Medical management of symptoms
  • Crisis intervention
  • Assessment of fundamental needs
  • Discharge planning
  • Referrals to rehabilitation and counseling services

Patients are given the tools to continue recovery after leaving the hospital through appropriate community-based aftercare programs with the goal of blending education regarding chemical dependency with practical methods to prevent relapse.

The service is staffed by qualified and experienced personnel, including a medical director and nursing staff. The staff ensures each patient receives the attention necessary for safe medical stabilization in the hospital.

Patients can be referred by anyone. Patients not referred by a physician must meet criteria for admission upon arrival to Norton Audubon Hospital.

To schedule an admission or for more information, call (502) 636-4967 or (800) 939-CARE/ (800) 939-2273.

New Vision accepts Medicaid, Medicare and most commercial insurance plans.

SpecialCare Hospital Management Corp. operates this service in conjunction with Norton Audubon Hospital.
