Cancer Treatments and Services

Radiation treatment

"Sophisticated radiation therapy services are a vital tool in the fight against cancer," according to Aaron Spalding, M.D., Ph.D., radiation oncologist with Norton Cancer Institute. "Our ability to bring this leading-edge technology to the Norton Healthcare downtown campus will have a life-changing impact for adult and pediatric patients and their families. It complements the existing sophisticated radiation therapy services we currently offer on the Norton Suburban Hospital campus."

Radiation Oncologists

Michael J. Hahl, M.D., Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Hahl earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. He served as Chief Resident of radiation oncology at the University of Louisville and became board certified in radiation oncology in 2002. After practicing in southern Indiana for several years, Dr. Hahl joined Norton Cancer Institute in June 2005.

Aaron Spalding, M.D., Ph.D., Adult and Pediatric Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Spalding completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan . He earned a doctorate in pharmacology during medical school at the University of Colorado . His post-doctoral fellowship, during his residency at the University of Michigan , focused on combining experimental cancer therapies with radiation. Dr. Spalding completed a pediatric radiation oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He provides multidisciplinary radiation treatment for children and adults, and adds research expertise to Norton Cancer Institute's clinical trials program. Dr. Spalding joined Norton Cancer Institute, in 2009.

The centerpiece of the radiation treatment services available in the new facility is the Novalis TxTM radiosurgery platform, which rotates around the patient to deliver treatment beams anywhere in the body from virtually any angle. This shaped-beam technology precisely adjusts the treatment beam to target the tumor site, ensuring that the optimal radiation dose is delivered while also protecting healthy tissue nearby.

Multidisciplinary clinics

The entire second floor is dedicated to the growing number of multidisciplinary clinics offered by Norton Cancer Institute and key partners. These clinics provide patients with convenient access to expert teams specially trained in diagnosing and treating advanced cancers and tumors, such as brain tumors, sarcoma and lung cancer. By combining physician visits and providing a team of experts in one location, patient outcomes, convenience and care are greatly improved.
