Norton Healthcare currently is the most comprehensive provider of neuroscience services in the area. By joining together with the largest neurosurgery practice in the area to create Norton Neuroscience Institute, Norton is well on its way to achieving our five-year goal of becoming a top-10 neuroscience program nationally. The institute provides skilled diagnosis and advanced treatment for complex conditions of the brain, spine and central nervous system, along with a robust research agenda involving basic science research and clinical trials.
Neuroscience is the study of the brain and central nervous system, particularly their physical and biological attributes and their control of movement, behavior and learning. The institute, through its own physician staff and partnerships with other providers, treats patients across the entire spectrum of adult and pediatric neurological and spinal disorders. These disorders affect patients requiring neurosurgical procedures (such as tumors, stroke, trauma, spinal disorders, and birth defects of the brain and spinal cord); those with neurological problems such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, neuromuscular, and related diseases; those requiring pain management diagnostic testing and treatment; and those with psychiatric problems that can have a neurological origin, such as severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders. One in every three people - some 1.7 million people in Kentucky and Southern Indiana alone- will be affected by one of these disorders in his or her lifetime.
