Making a Difference for Norton Heart Care

The Norton Healthcare Foundation provides funding for the medical attention that people experiencing heart problems need: both in the hospital and during follow-up visits for cardiovascular maintenance. Among other projects, the Norton Healthcare Foundation has initiated fundraising for the Norton Heart and Vascular Center. The center will be centrally located at Norton Audubon Hospital and will provide heart and vascular diagnostic testing, making a difference for heart patients throughout the region.

The Norton Heart and Vascular Center at Norton Audubon- what will it do?

Create a convenient, centralized diagnostic center by bringing together:

  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Noninvasive cardiology, which includes stress testing, EKG, Holter monitoring and echocardiography to diagnose cardiac disease.
  • Noninvasive vascular laboratory, which includes ultrasound and Doppler procedures performed to diagnose circulatory disorders and disease.

The new Heart and Vascular Center also will include:

  • A new state-of-the-art dual-head nuclear camera that will help provide a more dedicated and faster approach to determining if a patient's arteries are blocked or narrowed.
  • Digital storage of tests and images that will become a part of a specialized cardiology network, allowing tests be interpreted and results made available electronically - saving time in diagnosis and treatment.

The Norton Heart and Vascular Center - who will it help?

People like 63-year-old Carolyn Glauber: During a routine doctor's visit, Carolyn's physician found an irregularity in her heart. Carolyn, a former registered nurse, knew she had a mitral valve problem, but her cardiologist had determined at the time that the situation needed monitoring. After a visit to a specialist, Carolyn was sent to Norton Audubon hospital for some tests.

Carolyn and her family became well-acquainted with Norton Heart Care over the next few weeks, as Carolyn had a transesophageal echocardiogram, or TEE, and a cardiac catheterization to determine the extent of damage to her heart and appropriate treatment options. After testing, Carolyn was scheduled for a mitral valve replacement. Today, she is back home, helping to run the family's shoe and athletic apparel store.

What are the benefits for people like you?

For people like Carolyn and her family, the Heart and Vascular Center will improve care for patients undergoing heart tests, including:

  • Establish a single entry point for patients requiring multiple procedures
  • Offer comprehensive testing during times of emergency in its location adjacent to the emergency department
  • Provide easier patient and family access through the west entrance of the hospital
  • Offer its own registration area, allowing patients to go directly to the department for testing
  • Provide a more comfortable central waiting room and conference area
  • Provide a separate waiting area and more privacy for inpatients
  • Provide easier access to the laboratory and radiology for patients requiring procedures in these areas
