Preventive health

Under the Affordable Care Act, many health insurance plans are required to cover the following preventive care services at no cost to you.*

No-cost preventive care for men and women

  • Alcohol misuse screening and counseling

  • Aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease for men ages 45 to 79 and women ages 55 to 79

  • Blood pressure screening for all adults

  • Cholesterol screening for women over age 45, men over age 35 and other adults who are at high risk

  • Colorectal cancer screening for adults over age 50

  • Depression screening for all adults

  • Diet counseling for adults at high risk for chronic disease

  • HIV screening for everyone ages 15 to 65, those who are at increased risk and all sexually active women

  • Obesity screening and counseling for all adults

  • One-time abdominal aortic aneurysm screening for men ages 65 to 75 who have never smoked

  • Sexually transmitted disease prevention and counseling for adults at high risk and for all sexually active women

  • Syphilis screening for all adults at high risk

  • Tobacco use screening for all adults and products/resources to stop smoking. Expanded counseling to stop smoking for pregnant women.

  • Type 2 diabetes screening for adults with high blood pressure

  • Vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, shingles (herpes zoster), human papillomavirus, influenza (flu), measles/mumps/rubella, meningococcal, pneumococcal (pneumonia), tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis and chickenpox (varicella) (recommended doses, ages and risk groups vary)

No-cost preventive care for women

  • Annual cervical cancer screening (Pap test) for sexually active women

  • Chemoprevention counseling for women at high risk for breast cancer

  • Chlamydia infection screening for sexually active women

  • Comprehensive breastfeeding support and counseling from trained providers and access to breastfeeding supplies for pregnant and nursing women

  • Domestic and interpersonal violence screenings and counseling

  • Folic acid supplements for women who may become pregnant

  • Food and Drug Administration-approved contraception, sterilization procedures and patient education and counseling as prescribed by a health care provider for women who can become pregnant (does not include abortion-inducing drugs); this does not apply to health plans sponsored by certain exempt religious employers

  • Genetic counseling for breast cancer for women at high risk of carrying the BRCA gene mutation

  • Gestational diabetes screening for women 24 to 28 weeks' pregnant and those at high risk for developing gestational diabetes

  • Gonorrhea screening for all women at high risk

  • Hepatitis B screening for pregnant women at their first prenatal visit

  • Human papillomavirus DNA testing every three years for women age 30 and older with normal results

  • Mammography screening every one to two years for women over age 40

  • Osteoporosis screening for women over age 60 with certain risk factors

  • Rh incompatibility screening for pregnant women and follow-up testing for women at high risk

  • Routine anemia screening for pregnant women

  • Syphilis screening for pregnant women or others at increased risk

  • Urinary tract or other infection screening for pregnant women

  • Well-woman visits for women under age 65

*These screenings and services do not apply to some government-sponsored health plans or health plans created or bought before March 23, 2010, which are known as grandfathered plans.
