The da Vinci Surgical System
A new, less invasive surgical option for cancer patients
The da Vinci Surgical System, available at Norton Hospital, uses robotic technology to help surgeons see vital anatomical features more clearly, resulting in more precise procedures. This technology gives surgeons internal movement flexibility by providing a 360-degree manipulation of surgical instruments inside the patient’s abdomen. Once the cancerous tissue is removed, the wound is closed with only a few stitches.
Used successfully in thousands of prostate cancer procedures worldwide, the da Vinci Surgical System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from the surgeon. The robotic system cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions on its own.
Procedures performed using the da Vinci Surgical System eliminate the need for large incisions and offer patients several other potential benefits over traditional surgical methods, including:
- Less pain
- Reduced risk of infection
- Less blood loss and less need for transfusions
- Less scarring
- Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
As with any surgical procedure, these benefits cannot be guaranteed as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific.
The da Vinci Surgical System offers surgical treatment options for these cancer types:
