Electrocardiograms (EKGs)
Print a fact sheet about what you should expect and how to prepare for an EKG.
Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are one way for physicians to measure heartbeat and heart rate. An EKG works by placing electrodes on the arms, legs and chest to measure energy levels in the body. As the heart beats, the electrodes pick up on the electrical wave. These waves are recorded in an EKG and printed out or displayed for the physician or nurse to study or monitor.
EKGs are among the most common diagnostic tests performed on patients with heart concerns. The simple and painless procedure allows medical staff to keep a close eye on the status and progress of the heartbeat and the patient.
