Heart Nuclear Imaging

Print a fact sheet about what you should expect and how to prepare for nuclear imaging.

Nuclear imaging is a way for physicians to check blood flow through muscle tissue in the heart. To track the blood, a small amount of radioactive material called a tracer, is given to the patient through a vein in the arm. A camera then scans the material in the blood as it flows through the circulatory system and to the heart muscle. The test in conducted before and during exercise. The final image will show physicians what part(s) of the heart (if any) are not getting sufficient blood flow. As with most diagnostic procedures, nuclear imaging may be performed in combination with other tests.  Results may lead to further tests or treatments.
