Behavioral Health Counseling

The Norton Bariatric and Weight Management Program offers behavioral health counseling to assist patients before and after bariatric surgery. The first step involves a one-on-one evaluation provided by a bariatric behavioral health counselor to determine a patient’s emotional strengths and weaknesses, as well as readiness for bariatric surgery. If problem areas are identified, counselors assist in creating a personalized plan to address these issues prior to surgery. On pre-admission testing day, behavioral health counselors teach patients’ relaxation techniques to help with potential pre-surgery anxiety.

Behavioral health counselors also are available by appointment to provide individual counseling to address any emotional issues patients may experience following surgery. These professionals also are available at support groups to provide educational programs and to assist during all phases of the bariatric surgery process.
