Physiatrists treat medical conditions that cause pain or limit function. Also called a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, a physiatrist provides a full spectrum of care – from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation – to restore maximum health and quality of life.
This spectrum of care may include one or more of these nonsurgical treatments:
- Medication
- Therapeutic exercise
- Injections
- Assistive devices, such as brace or artificial limbs
- Heat and cold therapy
- Massage therapy

- Biofeedback and electrotherapies

From medications and therapy to appropriate surgical referrals, patients have access to a comprehensive treatment program within the Norton Healthcare system. When surgery is necessary, physiatrists work with patients and their surgeons before and after the surgical procedure. Physiatrists help patients during recovery by working with specialists such as neurologists, spine and orthopaedic surgeons, and other health care professionals, like physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists and psychologists.
