Kosair Children’s Hospital is looking for corporate and civic sponsors to conduct crayon drives to replenish our supply of crayons, markers and colored pencils.

Adopt an 'Ouchie Box'

After patients undergo procedures or tests, we routinely provide small items from the “Ouchie Box” to reward them. Individuals and groups can help by sponsoring an “Ouchie Box” on any of the hospital’s units for a specific period of time – a month, a year, etc. “Ouchie Boxes” help us keep a supply of smaller toys for 2- to 18-year-old patients. For more information, call the Child Life and Expressive Therapy Department at (502) 629-7542.

Provide Art Kits for Hospitalized Children

Children love to create and explore art when hospitalized. These distraction activities take their mind off their pain and anxieties. Art kits should be placed in a secure bag and can include crayons, markers, paint, glue, kits to glue together, coloring and/or activity books, fuzzy posters, papier-mâché boxes etc. Assembled art kits are handy for our busy nursing staff to easily grab when a patient is in need of a distraction activity. For more information on providing art kits, call the Child Life and Expressive Therapy Department at (502) 629-7542.

Magazine Collages

Hospitalized children often create collages to help them express their feelings. Therapists give patients paper or boxes and ask them to decorate using magazine photos that tell about themselves or their feelings. In order to do collages we are in need of pre-cut magazine photos for patients to select from when making their boxes. This is a great volunteer project for school students. Students can fill boxes with fun magazine photos and words. Call the Child Life and Expressive Therapy Department at (502) 629-7542 if your group would be willing to collect magazines and cut out appropriate photos for our children to use in collages.

Family Care Kits

Provide soap, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors, lotion, hair detangler, shaving cream, notepads, pens and other items for families who are spending a great deal of time at the hospital. Parents also enjoy things to keep their minds occupied while waiting. Kits include magazines and crossword and word search books.

Food/Snack Baskets

Parents with children in intensive care units rarely leave their children or the waiting area. Individuals and groups can put together fruit baskets or baskets of muffins or bagels. Juice boxes, cookies and crackers also are great items to include. We cannot distribute homemade items, but we can serve food purchased from a source that serves the public.

Gift of Music

Use your musical talents to bring the gift of music to the children at Kosair Children’s Hospital. Plan an age-appropriate performance for the lobby (ages 10 and up) or on the units (ages 14 and up).
