When most people think about heart disease, children typically don’t come to mind. Yet every year, nearly one child in every 100 is born with some type of congenital heart defect. Congenital heart disease is any disease caused by the abnormal development of the heart prior to birth. Congenital heart defects include abnormalities like holes, narrow valves or incorrectly placed or missing blood vessels. While the defects are present at birth, they are not caused by birth and can greatly impact the heart’s ability to function properly.
A majority of congenital heart defects are diagnosed and treated in children soon after birth, but sometimes defects can be so small they aren’t detected until much later in life. The specialists at the congenital heart center are trained to treat all types of congenital heart defects in both children and adults.
