Norton Healthcare now provides Spring View Hospital tertiary care, continuing education classes
Expanded health services now available in Marion County, Ky.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Norton Healthcare and Spring View Hospital in Lebanon, Ky., have entered into an affiliation agreement to bring expanded health services to residents of Marion County, Ky., effective Aug. 1, 2011. As part of the new agreement, Norton Healthcare provides Spring View Hospital access to subspecialists through the Norton Healthcare Access Center, as well as continuing education programs and classes to Spring View Hospital physicians and staff.

"We are pleased to provide patients at Spring View Hospital improved access to tertiary care on both an ambulatory and emergent basis through subspecialists associated with the Norton Healthcare Access Center," said Michael Esposito, system vice president, Business Development, and executive director, Service Line Operations, Norton Healthcare. "Unfortunately, in Kentucky, the incidence of cancer, heart disease and diabetes is among the highest in the nation. Residents of Marion County are not immune to this. We initially will focus on helping Spring View Hospital build and strengthen a variety of clinical programs and services with a special emphasis on cardiology service offerings. We also will help with the creation of a pulmonary rehab program. Providing assistance in this way is part of Norton Healthcare's not-for-profit mission to improve the health status of the communities we serve."

Through the affiliation agreement, Norton Healthcare also provides Spring View Hospital physicians and staff with continuing education programs and classes.

"Continuing education is necessary for our physicians and staff to stay abreast of new topics and trends in health care and to provide our patients with ongoing quality care," said Ruth McDaniel, CEO, Spring View Hospital. "Unfortunately, many specialized classes for medical providers are not easily accessible."

Through its new affiliation agreement with Norton Healthcare, Spring View Hospital now has access to more than 1,000 specialized medical education and personal development classes that will assist physicians and staff in obtaining their continuing education needs and help them ensure quality care for patients, according to McDaniel.

Norton Healthcare and Humana are one of only four national pilot sites, and the only one in Kentucky, to study the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) model through the prestigious Brookings – Dartmouth ACO Pilot Project. The ACO model Norton Healthcare and Humana are co-creating establishes incentives for health systems to increase quality and efficiency, better coordinate patient care, eliminate waste and reduce the overuse and misuse of care. The ACO model will be an important part of health care reform.

"I commend Norton Healthcare for its work as an accountable care organization," McDaniel said. "I also am thrilled that our physicians and staff have the opportunity to learn more about providing quality care to our patients through Norton Healthcare's experience as an ACO. This can only benefit the residents of Marion County."
