Hemophilia and Other Blood Clotting Disorders

Hemophilia is a rare, often inherited blood disorder that affects the way the blood clots. People with hemophilia lack blood clotting factors, which are substances in blood that are involved in the clotting process.

People with blood clotting disorders, including hemophilia, are at risk for excessive bleeding from a cut or minor injury, and for internal bleeding that can cause further damage.

The board-certified, fellowship-trained hematology specialists at Norton Healthcare provide comprehensive care for patients with hemophilia and other blood clotting disorders. Through the largest health care system in Louisville, patients have access to three infusion centers, a range of subspecialists, and patient resources and complementary therapies that may be important to a patient’s care.

Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment

Our hematologists have specialized training in benign blood disorders. Comprehensive care for hemophilia involves:

  • Managing inhibitors, or antibodies, in the blood
  • Controlling bleeding
  • Providing subspecialty care for surgery or bleeding episodes

Treatment for people with hemophilia and other blood clotting disorders includes factor-replacement therapies that replace the blood clotting factors in the blood. We offer all available treatments to patients, including all approved agents or engineered molecules used to treat blood clotting disorders.
