You have a lot to think about when exploring post-secondary academic programs. Norton Healthcare wants to make sure the cost of tuition does not keep you from leaning into your career. From tuition assistance to scholarships, we offer financial support to those pursuing clinical paths to help make growing your career possible.

Norton Healthcare Scholars Program

The Norton Healthcare Scholars Program offers students pursuing designated health care-related degree programs the opportunity to get help paying for college. When you become a Norton Healthcare Scholar, you can fast-track your career in health care with an opportunity to work at Norton Healthcare in a clinical setting upon graduation.

Program Overview

There are two options for receiving tuition assistance through the Norton Healthcare Scholars Program.

Traditional Scholar: If you are a full-time or part-time Norton Healthcare employee interested in pursuing an identified health care related degree, you may be eligible to participate in the Traditional Scholar program. This program offers tuition assistance up to $5,250 per year (a maximum of $21,000) per degree program. This nontaxable tuition assistance program requires a one-year work commitment at Norton Healthcare after graduation.


Accelerated Scholar: If you are a full-time, part-time or PRN (as needed) Norton Healthcare employee, or you are not employed at Norton Healthcare, you may be eligible to participate in the Accelerated Scholar program. This taxable loan forgiveness program offers up to a total of $45,000 for students pursuing an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or master’s entry into clinical practice degree in registered nursing, respiratory therapy, medical lab technician (MLT) and medical technologist (MT) that lead to a higher clinical credential. Degrees in other identified areas of need may be eligible for up to $24,000 in tuition assistance. The post-graduation work commitment is based on the total amount of Accelerated Scholar funding you use. You will be responsible for applicable taxes.

Program Requirements

The Norton Healthcare Scholars Program is open to Norton Healthcare employees and nonemployees who are actively enrolled in a health care degree program and pursuing a clinical career path. Applications for Norton Healthcare Scholars are accepted on a rolling basis. As part of the application process, you will schedule a time to meet with a designated Workforce Development college and career specialist to discuss the program. If you are accepted as a Norton Healthcare Scholar, you will agree to work for Norton Healthcare after you graduate and you will be provided educational assistance based on your degree program.

Norton Healthcare James R. Petersdorf Dependent Scholarship

Norton Healthcare provides a limited number of $2,000 scholarships to dependents of Norton Healthcare employees. Students must be interested in pursuing a health care-related field. These awards are made possible through the generosity of the James R. Petersdorf Foundation.

Program Overview

Norton Healthcare will award the one-year scholarship toward tuition or fees associated with books and technology for the fall academic term each year. New applicants and previous recipients are invited to apply annually. The application period opens in the spring each year.

Program Requirements

To be considered for this scholarship, you must be eligible to be covered as a dependent on a Norton Healthcare employee’s benefits plan. You also must be accepted as a full-time student at a regionally accredited university or college for a health care-related degree.

Pharmacy Residency

Norton Healthcare’s pharmacy residency programs’ robust and comprehensive training environment prepares graduates for positions as acute-care pharmacist clinicians or for pursuing a second year of specialized postgraduate training. The postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency program builds on a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education, and the postgraduate year two (PGY-2) program prepares PGY-1 trained pharmacists in the specialized practice of caring for patients in the ambulatory care setting.

Residency Rotations

After completing orientation, residents develop knowledge, skills and competence in postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency in a broad range of pharmaceutical services. The majority of the year comprises four direct patient care rotations selected by the resident in consultation with the residency program director (RPD) and the following core rotations:

  • Adult internal medicine
  • Adult critical care medicine
  • Infectious diseases/stewardship
  • Transitions of care

Residency Format

The postgraduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy residency year is divided into four quarters, each with three blocks that are either four or five weeks in length. Each hospital offers a unique facet to the customized training plan for our residents to engage with the pharmacy department and leadership at that location.

To best prepare our residents for the next step in their career, we offer customized schedules to focus on the resident’s individual development of knowledge and skills. Our residents will complete a longitudinal research project and obtain a teaching certificate, as well as have opportunities to mentor and educate students through both didactic and practice-based teaching.

Along with schools and partners in the community, we developed the Norton Healthcare High School Academy to give high school students the chance to explore, select and create meaningful experiences for them and our patients.

Academy Overview

Norton Healthcare High School Academy is an internship program for students attending partnering high schools. The program provides opportunities for training and experience that align with educational goals through health science pathways. When you participate in this internship, you will gain hands-on experience in one of several health care-related roles with Norton Healthcare. During the program, you will have the chance to explore and observe many health care disciplines through attending symposiums, job shadowing, and exposure to staff and leaders.

Academy Requirements

To participate in the Norton Healthcare High School Academy Program, students must be enrolled in a local high school and be age 17 or older. We look for students who are passionate about serving the needs of our community.

When you participate in Norton Healthcare-UPS Health Care Career Tracks, you will have the opportunity to work at UPS while taking prerequisite courses at Jefferson Community and Technical College or the University of Louisville. Twelve to 18 months before you are scheduled to complete your degree track or program, you will begin taking professional courses and be invited to explore one or more of the following career options:

Program Overview

Nurses are essential in the health care industry. At Norton Healthcare, we value our student nurses and show them how indispensable they are by paying for their time as a student apprentice. We reinforce nursing education and patient safety as well as awareness and appreciation of nursing in the organization and operations of our organization.

Program Requirements

We welcome student nurses who are in their junior year of a Bachelor of Science in nursing program or have completed one term in an Associate of Science nursing program. If selected for the apprenticeship, you may elect to participate in one of many specialty areas in our sites of care.

Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship Program

College students currently enrolled in an accredited respiratory therapy program are eligible to participate in Norton Healthcare’s Respiratory Therapy Apprenticeship Program. Our paid apprenticeship program prepares you for a job as a registered respiratory therapist after graduation.

Program Overview

We’re proud that our program is the first hospital-based respiratory therapy training program in Greater Louisville and helps prepare college students to join this critical health care field. Our program takes a tiered approach to practice experience and learning development. You also will receive compensation throughout your 12 to 18 months of educational and observational experiences.

Program Requirements

To join our respiratory therapy apprenticeship program, you must be enrolled in a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Cary (CoARC) accredited Respiratory Therapy program. You also must pass pre-employment screening.

Residency and Fellowship Programs People Are at the Heart of What We Do

We are committed to supporting residency and fellowship programs that are focused on developing a talented, dedicated workforce. Through our programs, residents can learn and experience firsthand what it’s like to work at Norton Healthcare in a variety of health care fields.

Podiatric Residency

The Norton Audubon Hospital Podiatric Residency Program is a three-year podiatric medicine and surgery program that is consistently recognized as one of the leading residency programs in the nation. Residents have the opportunity to hone their medical and surgical skills under a faculty of physicians in podiatry and other specialties, including a number who are certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Residency Format

Our training resources facilitate residents’ achievements toward specific competencies and Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) requirements. Our program meets all requirements for certification by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and/or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Our residents are immersed in a program that trains them for inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical management.

The residency format includes weekly lectures covering case discussions, radiology reviews, presentations, hands-on workshops, our Bioskills Lab, journal clubs and physician lectures, along with the opportunity to attend trauma conferences.

This competitive residency program currently accepts two residents each year, for a total of six residents. You must be a graduate of an approved college of podiatric medicine with a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher, have an externship/clerkship as a third- or fourth-year student and sit for the Kentucky medical licensure exam.

Norton Healthcare Administrative Fellowship Program

Norton Healthcare offers a two-year administrative fellowship to candidates who have completed or will complete a master’s degree prior to the fellowship start date. The administrative fellowship at Norton Healthcare is offered through two tracks: Norton Healthcare system and Norton Medical Group.

Norton Healthcare System Track

  • This fellowship exposes you to our entire health care system, including our comprehensive medical group and five hospitals:

  • Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital
  • Through the system track, you’ll be immersed in large-scale, high-impact projects that directly benefit the organization. You’ll gain exposure to leadership and be directly involved in executive meetings, initiatives and other strategic matters that offer a better understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing a large health care system. You’ll experience:

Norton Medical Group Track

The Norton Medical Group fellowship track is designed to provide the fellow with the holistic understanding of a large medical group’s dynamics, gained from working alongside leaders within Norton Healthcare. The fellow will have a unique opportunity to be exposed to all facets of health care delivery and the internal and external pressures that impact a major community health system at the local, state and national levels.
Located in Greater Louisville, the Norton Medical Group administrative office is positioned within the clinical network of the system and is an organizational partner in strategic growth decisions. The fellow will report directly to the system vice president of operations and have direct exposure to the executive leadership team, including the chief administrative officer and system vice presidents.
